Given that I promised a lengthy post (and Talia will hold me to that), I should begin writing it. (note: I was expecting to draft this but ended up writing it straight through).
Overall, this was another amazing semester, and I continue to very much enjoy being at Davidson. It is the perfect fit and there’s nowhere I’d rather be.
The semester started out a little weird. I made a post in September about how some of that initial allure had worn off and it wasn’t quite as exciting to be at school as it used to be. But with time I grew accustomed to that and learned to love having established roles throughout campus.
I’m living with five of my best friends from our floor last year, and although our dorm is a little secluded, it’s been a good time. At least one of them is always around so Knox is never too boring. Plus I can’t imagine living without them, even my roommate Fred, who I give so much shit to.
Talia goes to Davidson now. It’s nice to be able to share everything I get to experience with someone else from home, because I usually feel like I can’t do Davidson justice with descriptions (even though I am a tour guide).
I also started working in the writing center. It’s nice to pull in some extra cash, especially now that I have my car at school, and I’ve actually enjoyed my work a great deal. It’s also made me a better writer, too.
I ran the half-marathon is September. That feels like a long time ago now. That was one of my biggest accomplishments to date; I felt unbelievably proud of myself at the finish line. I’ve continued to run, albeit shorter distances, and have kept off the 15 pounds that I dropped (naturally) during my training. I’m probably in the best shape of my life right now.
I’ve continued to play ultimate. I made it to one of our two tournaments in the fall, and I’m hoping to be more involved this Spring than I was last year. I love playing and the ultimate team is one of my favorite groups of people on campus.
It was interesting to see SigEp rush from the other side. It wasn’t nearly as much fun as being a freshman, but next semester will be MUCH more enjoyable. At times it was a lot of work, but it mostly paid off. We didn’t get a few of my favorite kids, but I do really like our pledge class. However, as far as they are concerned, they are the worst fucking pledge class ever and they’ll be lucky if 15/23 make it into the house. Can’t wait.
My classes were really interesting, and luckily not too stressful. My ideal life path continues to develop and I couldn’t be more excited. Over the summer I’ll be in Jordan studying Arabic and in the fall I’m hoping to study in Granada. It will be an exciting few months.
I took an Islamic history course, American civil religion, Arabic 101 and Theological ethics. I’ve got 4/10 classes for a religion major, which I officially declared a few weeks ago, and it’s looks like I’m headed for an Arabic minor. I genuinely enjoyed all four of my classes and learned a lot that I think is extremely relevant to what I want to do.
Other memorable things I did this semester: Experienced NASCAR for the first time at the Bank of America 500, shot an AK-47 to relieve finals stress, went to the Michigan-Ohio State football game over Thanksgiving break, stormed the field after Davidson upset #2 UNC (the eventual national champion) in Men’s soccer, went to my first Panthers game (against the Falcons), and went to Asheville again over fall break.
A new year presented new challenges for Savannah and me, but in time we figured everything out and settled into our new situation. My semester was comparatively relaxed and our schedules hardly overlapped, so it was tough to find time that worked for both of us, and it was definitely frustrating for a while. Overall, we handled it well and I love watching our relationship continue to grow. I’m not about to propose, but I do realize that we’re quite serious at this point, and that can be a little strange to think about. But I couldn’t be happier.
If anything, my biggest worry at this point is that I’ll never want to leave Davidson. Everything is so perfect, it really is the Davidson bubble. I can’t wait for next semester. After that, I might be out of the country for six months. But I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. I think I’ve covered most of it. I’m sure I’ve left out some things, but what can you expect when you try to write about the last 4+ months in hindsight?
